The help I need...

Every day I come across someone who doesn't really know their Bible. It really scares me because they are the most likely to be lead astray by just listening and agreeing with what someone says is quoted as being in the Bible.

If we don't know what the Bible says, we have a tendency to think that it absolves us from the responsibility of following the Law that is written in the Bible. Is that the truth? How do we know if we don't know what the Bible says?

It seems we all know the 10 commandments and many think that just knowing those commandments is just enough.

This site is designed to answer those questions and more.

Reading your Bible: Am I absolved from not knowing what is in the Bible?

Reading your Bible: Am I absolved from not knowing what is in the Bible?

Am I absolved from not knowing what is in the Bible?

Let's take a look at where this concept is derived from.

Luke 12:48 (NIV):

48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

This makes one believe if they don't know the truth, then they are going to get a lesser punishment than the one who does know the truth and doesn't follow it.

It looks like a good verse by itself, but I will not just give you one verse to justify anything I say on this blog. Let's take the whole context of this.

Luke 12:35-48 (NIV):

35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”
42 The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

What does verses 46-47 say? I clearly says that if you know what Jesus wants of you and you don't do it, you are in serious trouble. Let us look further.

John 3:16 (NIV)

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Wow. Now this verse tells me that if I just believe in Jesus I will not go to hell, and am guaranteed access into heaven. Is this really the truth? Well, to find the truth, let us look further into John.

John 8:31-32 (NIV):

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Hum. This says that if I am to be considered a disciple (a student of Christ,) I need to hold onto what Jesus teaches. What better resource could I use to find what Jesus teaches other than the Bible? This makes me believe that a disciple needs to study the Bible, but what is a disciple?

Acts 11:25-27 (NIV)

25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.
27 During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

Well, here we see that the disciples got a name change. What was that name change? It was from disciple to Christian. So if we call ourselves a Christian, then we also call ourselves a disciple. This is a teaching that many do not have knowledge of.

Now that we know what a disciple is, let us look further into John and see what Jesus said about those who at this point in John, had belief (or better believed) that Jesus was the Messiah sent by God.

John 33-59 (NIV):

33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Wow. It seems that the same people who gathered around Jesus because he was performing miracles by healing the sick and forgiving sins, was ready to stone him and declared that their father was not his father.

This brings up another question. How can I be lost to Jesus, if I have followed everything I was taught, though it might not be the truth?

That can be answered in the Bible.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 (NIV):

The Man of Lawlessness
1 Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2 not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. 3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
5 Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6 And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

Ouch. Did that really say what I think it said? It sure did. One can believe that they are with God, and not be. The only way they can be certain is by studying what the truth is all about. What evidence is there that this is true?

Acts 17:11 (NIV):

11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

Do not take any ones word for the truth. You have to find out for yourself if you want to be noted as noble in character. I have spent over 20 years studying the Bible on a consistent basis. Many people say you should read the Bible in a year. I say read the Bible in it's entirety, but at a pace that is comfortable. If it becomes a choir, you will not receive it with great eagerness. I will promise you though, it will be a joy, once you know the truth, the truth will set you free. Will it set you free from sin? The answer is emphatically "YES!" Once you know the truth and it sinks into the heart, you will no longer desire to sin. All you will want to do is love one another.
